Samuel Umtiti’s controversial Instagram story
In the lead-up to the match against Strasbourg on Sunday (3pm), Lille’s coach, Paulo Fonseca, addressed the Instagram story posted by Samuel Umtiti on Thursday during the Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg against Aston Villa. The photo posted by Umtiti, who is currently sidelined due to a knee injury, while his teammates were playing stirred up some controversy among Lille supporters.
Untimely social media post
Samuel Umtiti, who has been out of action since February following knee surgery, posted a picture of his left leg while his teammates were battling Aston Villa. The photo depicted Umtiti relaxing on what seemed to be a boat or pedal boat, far from the stadium where Lille would eventually be eliminated in a penalty shootout.
Defending Umtiti
Despite the backlash from some fans, Paulo Fonseca defended the defender’s actions by stating that Umtiti is undergoing recovery, sometimes in different locations. He emphasized that Umtiti is still part of the team, even though he has only played 13 games for Lille since joining from Barcelona last summer.
